Nearly 50 years after it made history as Canada's first licensed, instructional campus radio station, London's 106.9 The X now faces an uncertain future, as the college running it grapples with a major deficit and a changing media landscape.

In a statement to CBC News on Thursday, Fanshawe College confirmed it is no longer able to continue financially supporting the station, also known as CIXX-FM, or The X, and is actively soliciting interested parties to take over operations.

It comes months after Fanshawe announced it would pull the plug on its longtime radio program, along with 39 others , after a review of enrolment trends, market demand, and financial viability.
