The city of Port Huron has announced an emergency initiative in response to the halt in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program beginning Nov. 1 due to the federal government shutdown.

"A coalition of private donors, community partners, and nonprofits have been mobilized to rapidly deploy resources and ensure no family in Port Huron goes hungry," the city said in an announcement.

Five semi-trucks each loaded with about 44,000 pounds of food, enough to feed 300 to 500 families, will be distributed to residents.

The first truck will be at the YMCA of the Blue Water Area, 1525 Third St. at 9 a.m. Monday, Nov. 3.
