MAINE, USA — A federal judge has ordered the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to tap into its Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) contingency funds to keep food benefits flowing during the ongoing federal government shutdown, according to a release from the Office of Maine Attorney General Aaron Frey.

Gov. Janet Mills and Frey have welcomed this move and continue to press the Trump administration to act fast.

The ruling, issued late this week by the U.S. District Court for Massachusetts, came after Maine and 25 other states sued the USDA for suspending SNAP benefits in violation of federal law.
