Kate Rogers plans to return to the Alamo some day—to see how the cradle of Texas liberty has been finally transformed from a tacky tourist trap wedged into downtown San Antonio into a world-class destination that does justice to the site’s three-hundred-year history. In a sense, she will be enjoying the fruits of her labor. During her four and a half years as CEO of Alamo Trust, she oversaw the $550 million effort to renovate the landmark. But she won’t be going back in that capacity. Last week, she was forced to resign—an abrupt sacking that left many reeling.
