LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) - A federal judge has ordered the release of emergency funds to continue Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits during the government shutdown, according to Congressman Henry Cuellar.

Cuellar, a senior Democrat on the House Appropriations Committee, said the ruling will protect hundreds of thousands of residents in Texas’ 28th Congressional District, which includes Laredo, who depend on SNAP.

“Congress appropriated these funds, and they must be put to immediate use,” Cuellar said in a social media post on Friday, October 31.
