OAKLAND, Calif. - The Oakland Museum of California (OMCA) says they experienced a significant theft at its off-site storage facility on the morning of October 15.
Officials say that more than 1,000 items, largely historic memorabilia, were stolen during the break-in.
OMCA has been collaborating with the Oakland Police Department and the FBI Art Crime Team in the weeks since the theft. The museum is now sharing additional details about the incident with their approval.
Investigators say they believe the theft was more of a crime of opportunity rather than a targeted attack against the museum. The perpetrators did not appear to specifically identify the facility as museum storage or target particular items. Instead, they took items that were easily accessible.
