Residents living within the borders of Constantine Public Schools will be asked to vote on a proposal Tuesday, Nov. 4 that would restore the district’s operating millage to the former level.

The proposal specifically asks residents to vote on an adjustment back to 18 mills, which is considered the standard rate for public schools throughout the state of Michigan used to fund general operations. This uniform millage structure was established by Proposal A of 1994 and the Revised School Code.

Michigan law states that the 18-mill non-homestead levy must be renewed by voters every 10 years in most districts. Some communities approve a slightly higher millage rate to allow for adjustments if needed, according to Section 380.1211(1) of the Michigan Revised School Code.
