California has joined more than 20 other states in suing the Trump administration for what officials call the unlawful suspension of federal food assistance during the ongoing government shutdown.

Gov. Gavin Newsom and Attorney General Rob Bonta announced Friday that the state is challenging the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s refusal to fund Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits for November, despite the agency having access to contingency funds set aside for such emergencies.
