Thousands of people gathered in Serbia’s second-largest city Novi Sad on Saturday to commemorate the victims of a fatal railway station roof collapse, marking a year since the tragedy that sparked the biggest protests in decades.
People placed flowers and candles along temporary fencing near the damaged station entrance, where 16 people were killed when its canopy collapsed on November 1, 2024.
“I feel … great pain and sadness,” Svetlana, a 45-year-old woman told AFP, summarising the feeling of mourners who stood in silence.
Tens of thousands of people are expected to rally for the commemorations that will start at the station at 11:52 am (1052 GMT), the time when the tragedy occurred, with 16 minutes of silence observed for 16 victims.
