A recent FBI-led raid at an Idaho race track shows how immigration has become a major driver across federal law enforcement under the Trump administration.
Over 200 officers from at least 14 agencies, including U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement and Border Patrol, detained around 400 people.
The Oct. 19 operation resulted in just four gambling-related arrests, while 105 people were arrested on suspicion of immigration violations.
Witnesses reported aggressive tactics, including zip-tying children, though it's unclear which agency the officers who detained the children were from.
The Oct. 19 operation is a striking example of how immigration has become a major driver across federal law enforcement to a previously unheard of extent. It demonstrated the level of coordination among agencies to address President Donald Trump’s mass deportation agenda. At the same time, this and other immigration dragnets have entangled U.S. citizens and legal residents and have been marked by a heavy use of force.
The raid on La Catedral Arena struck nerves in Canyon County, which has the most Hispanic residents in Idaho and where 72% of the vote went to President Donald Trump last year.
Five families interviewed by The Associated Press said officers zip-tied children as young as 11, though many did not know which agency restrained the children. They also said an 8-year-old boy got glass in his mouth as he screamed while officers broke his car window. Several children were separated from family members for hours.
The FBI initially said no aggressive tactics were used on children but later amended that statement to say “young children.”
