The mourning dove is North America’s most widespread native species of dove. Classified as a songbird, there are 14 total species of doves and pigeons that inhabit parts of the continent, including Mexico.
Other species include the non-native Eurasian collared dove (which Minnesota is also home to), and the white-winged dove, ringed turtle dove, spotted dove, white-tipped dove, the Key West quail-dove, Inca dove, ruddy ground dove and the common ground dove.
The extinct passenger pigeon was also a close relative of the mourning dove. Other dove relatives, pigeons, also occur throughout North America and Mexico. Aside from the "rock dove," also known as feral pigeons, several other wild pigeons can be found, such as band-tailed, red-billed and white-crowned pigeons.
