A man is dead and two others were injured – one of them a University of Minnesota student – as gunfire erupted in the heart of Minneapolis' Dinkytown neighborhood early Saturday morning.

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara says an officer was alerted to the sound of "two bursts of fully-automatic gunfire" at around 2:40 a.m. near the intersection of 5th Street Southeast and 13th Avenue Southeast.

Officers arrived in the area to find two victims with gunshot wounds at the intersection, with a third found wounded in the alleyway behind Frank & Andrea's Pizzeria.

One of the victims, who police say could be a teenage male or a young man, was pronounced dead at the scene.
