PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A research team spearheaded by Oregon State University has located what scientists believe is the oldest ice and air on the planet.

The institution has revealed that Princeton University’s John Higgins and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution’s Sarah Shackleton, both a part of the Center for Oldest Ice Exploration led by OSU, fronted the group of the researchers who uncovered 6-million-year-old ice and air bubbles in Antarctica’s Alan Hills.

Their findings were published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences earlier this week.

According to the Oregon university, this is the “most significant” discovery the Center for Oldest Ice Exploration — or COLDEX — has made since it was funded in 2021. COLDEX Director and OSU paleoclimatologist Ed Brook said
