A coal mine in southeastern B.C. seeking to expand operations could face setbacks after the federal government this week said more work is needed to address cross-border water pollution risks.

The Impact Assessment Agency of Canada says it has reviewed the proposed Fording River extension project in B.C.’s Elk Valley and determined it needs further assessment because of the potential for adverse effects on fish and fish habitat, migratory birds, transboundary water pollution, and Indigenous Peoples and their rights.

The assessment agency ruling comes despite a push by governments to expedite mining and other projects , in an effort to boost the economy and become less dependent on the U.S.

Glencore-owned Elk Valley Resources, which operates four steelmaking coal mines in the valley,
