CHICAGO (WLS) -- As Chicagoans sound the alarm over potentially crippling cuts to the CTA, suburban counties are hitting the gas on their own transit solution.

Kane, Lake and McHenry counties have been testing an on-demand "dial-a-ride" program. It offers regularly scheduled rides, particularly for people who are seniors, have a disability or don't drive.

The service is a lifeline for residents, who say it fills an important gap in public transit. However, the program has its limitations, with lawmakers divided over funding for the fledgling effort.
