As a result of the colder and darker nights, searches for electric blankets have soared by 74 percent in the past month as people are keen to find cheap and convenient ways to stay warm in the coming months. ‌

However, as tempting as a heated blanket may seem, cleaning and hygiene expert Sara Aparcio at Homeaglow has warned that these popular quilts could actually be harbouring millions of unseen guests, from bacteria to dust mites that could cause illness this winter. A study from Ohio State University found that a typical mattress can host between an estimated 100,000 and 10 million dust mites. ‌
