Martha Layne Collins, whose distinction as the first woman to serve as governor of Kentucky was stained by her husband’s conviction on federal extortion charges, has died at age 88.
Her death early Nov. 1 in Lexington was announced by Gov. Andy Beshear, who called her a powerhouse whose accomplishments laid a foundation for future generations.
