FRANKFORT, Ky. (WEVV) — Kentucky is mourning the passing of former Governor Martha Layne Collins.
Collins was the state's first and only woman Governor, and was in office from 1983 - 1987.
"Gov. Collins was a powerhouse, transforming our commonwealth through major accomplishments like bringing Toyota to our state for its first U.S. site. She created a foundation for us to build a strong future upon, and her legacy will continue to benefit Kentucky families for generations," Gov. Andy Beshear shared Saturday.
Gov. Collins was born in Shelby County in 1936 and graduated from the University of Kentucky. She taught in the public schools of Louisville and Woodford County before entering the world of politics in 1971.
