FRANKFORT, Ky. (WKYT) - Gov. Andy Beshear declared a state of emergency Friday after hundreds of thousands of Kentuckians did not receive their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits.
The executive order directs $5 million to Feeding Kentucky to help food banks across the commonwealth address the immediate need.
Laura Brooks with God’s Pantry Food Bank estimates that 250,000 people in central and eastern Kentucky may need to supplement their SNAP benefits with food provided by local food banks and pantries.
“The reality is that there are 250,000 people who did not receive their SNAP benefits this morning,” Brooks said.
While the exact amount God’s Pantry will receive from the $5 million is unknown, Brooks noted that each dollar can provide six meals due to their larg
