PLATTSBURGH, New York (WWNY) - The Department of Justice said in a press release Friday that a woman charged in the deaths of a family of four was extradited from Canada to the United States.
Stephanie Square, 52, of the Akwesasne Mohawk Indian Reservation, made her first appearance in a Plattsburgh court Friday. She was arrested in Canada in August 2024 in connection with the incident.
The DOJ says on March 29th, 2023, Square and others allegedly attempted to smuggle a Romanian family of four, including two small children, across the St. Lawrence River from Canada to the United States. Each of the family members, as well as the boat’s captain, died that night on the river.
Court documents say Square was a member of an organization that smuggled humans across the U.S.-Canada border thro
