Tragedy struck devotees at the Venkateswara Swamy temple in Andhra Pradesh’s Srikakulam district on Saturday morning when a stempede broke out at the shrine due to a huge rush of people, resulting in nine deaths and injuries to several others.
At least eight women and a boy lost their lives during the commotion at the temple in Srikakulam’s Kasibugga town. Several others suffered injuries or breathing difficulties and were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.
The stampede occurred as a large crowd gathered at the temple on the occasion of Ekadashi, Andhra Chief Minister's Office said in a statement. Overcrowding because of the heavy rush led to the tragic incident.
