Usually, when a hotel manager gets globally recognized for being a leader in the industry, it’s because that person found a way to increase the number of guests or came up with a plan to make their stays more enjoyable.

But in the case of Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge general manager Garrett Turta, being named the hotelier of the year by Historic Hotels Worldwide came from the fact that he actually helped to save a hotel.

Turta was named Hotelier of the Year on Friday in a ceremony in Seattle.

In the summer of 2024, as the flames from the Jasper fire threatened to destroy the lodge and cabins of the famous Jasper Park Lodge, he made the call for all sprinklers to be turned on to flood the golf course, creating a watery barrier between the hotel and the onrushing flames.
