Canberra drivers face new penalties from Monday as existing mobile device detection cameras are repurposed to police seatbelt offences, aiming to save lives on ACT roads.
Not wearing a seatbelt has cost the lives of 10 drivers in the ACT over the past seven years, according to government statistics. These fatalities account for 15 per cent of all road deaths in the territory between 2018 and 2024.
So far this year , none of the road fatalities have involved people who were not wearing a seatbelt, ACT Policing confirmed.
In a major step toward reducing deaths and serious injuries, existing mobile device detection cameras will be expanded to capture drivers and passengers travelling without wearing seatbelts or those wearing them incorrectly.
