Liberal Senator Sarah Henderson has thrown her weight behind the Nationals’ push to abandon Australia’s 2050 net zero commitment, declaring that “we cannot sit on the fence” as divisions within the Coalition deepen over climate policy.

The Nationals’ Federal Council voted over the weekend to scrap support for the target, calling instead for a “balanced energy mix” of coal, gas, renewables and nuclear power.

While the decision does not bind federal MPs, the move is expected to influence upcoming Coalition talks on a joint emissions policy.

Speaking to Sky News Australia, Ms Henderson said Labor’s climate laws were wreaking havoc on both the economy and the environment.
