As Australians, what we are really concerned about is the blistering cost of energy but that does not mean we can shrug off moral blindness when we see it.
Opposition Leader Sussan Ley’s attack on Anthony Albanese for wearing a ‘Joy Division’ t-shirt on his return from Washington might have been designed as a moral reckoning.
The Prime Minister knew what the band’s name meant, thanks to a heads up on a podcast three years ago.
The “Joy Divisions” were the units of Jewish women brutalised as sex slaves in Nazi concentration camps.
And yet he wore it anyway, an especially tone deaf move in 2025.
But I would argue the two things, decency and cost of living, are not in competition.
We expect and deserve both: leaders with judgment and a government that can make life affordable again.
