BISMARCK, N.D. (KFYR) - The North Dakota Game and Fish Department manages the popular Painted Woods Wildlife Management Area just south of Washburn in McLean County.

“We manage it for waterfowl, upland game and whitetail deer, essentially. Since 2016, we’ve been able to add two additions to it. So now we’re talking nearly a thousand acres of public land along Painted Woods Creek,” said Dan Halstead, North Dakota Game and Fish wildlife resource management supervisor.

The Painted Woods watershed is around 305 square miles, and until the McLean County water board got involved, the WMA had a history of flooding during wet years.
