A man is in custody after a Halloween crime spree that allegedly included a failed carjacking and an armed robbery in a Canal Street convenience store, where he took a woman hostage and engaged in a brief standoff with police before they shot him, according to NOPD.
The standoff began shortly after 8:30 p.m. Friday, when investigators say suspect Emmanuel Harris, 54, approached an NOPD officer and pointed a weapon at several bystanders before entering the gas station and convenience store at the intersection of North Galvez and Canal Street.
The officer requested backup, and additional units — including members of the NOPD Special Operations Division, who were working nearby as part of Halloween patrols — responded, the NOPD said.
