LEXINGTON, Ky. — Kentucky's only community-owned grocery is bracing for the holidays and families facing food insecurity.
Mountains of colorful produce, fresh meats, dairy and foods locally sourced from different areas of Kentucky have been part of Lexington nonprofit Good Foods Co-op's mission for 50 years.
“Thought that a co-op would be a good way to basically set up something that would serve their needs," said former Lexington Mayor Steve Kay, one of 12 elected board members and past board president. "And over time, it's kind of grown and changed locations ... [the] store is a $10 million annual operation, just shy of $10 million."
The fresh food general store and cafe is Kentucky's only community-owned fresh food market, with more than 10,000 members invested.
