Indiana Michigan Power is encouraging customers to reduce “phantom energy” use — electricity consumed by devices that remain plugged in but not actively operating, according to a community announcement. The company says this hidden energy drain can increase monthly bills even when homes appear dark and quiet.

Phantom energy occurs when electronics such as TVs, computers, phone chargers and washing machines draw power while idle. I&M recommends several steps to help customers cut unnecessary energy use:
