Jessica Plain says she her early life was full of abuse and drugs.

From the impacts of her parents’ addictions, to her own drug use starting at age 13, homelessness, stints in jail, and abusive partners, the Aamjiwnaang First Nation woman said she didn’t think she was worthy of love.

“I was beaten and abused by most of my partners . . . for most of my teenage and adult life,” she said.

In one of her last relationships before seeking help she was called ugly and worthless, she said.

“I probably would have stayed if my daughter didn’t tell me that love isn’t supposed to hurt,” she said.

Worried about the kind of life her youngest – her fourth child – would have, she packed her bags and left, she said.
