MATHEWS COUNTY, Va. — Someone cleaning out a shed in the Moon area of Mathews County on Friday discovered two grenades, according to the sheriff’s office.
Deputies with the Mathews County Sheriff’s Office responded to a home in the Moon area for a report of two grenades that fell from a shelf. An explosives team from Newport News responded, as well as Virginia State Police bomb technicians. Officials established a perimeter barricade and helped ensure the safety of people and property.
A Navy explosives team arrived hours later and used X-ray equipment to identify one of the grenades as a high-explosive yellow-marked grenade. The other was determined to possibly be inert.
The Navy team removed the grenades and transported them back to their base for disposal.
