Teachers got an emotional welcome back to the classroom from the Edmonton Public School Board on Friday.

Outgoing chair Julie Kusiek acknowledged a fraught week — teachers ordered back to the classroom by the United Conservative Party, who invoked the “notwithstanding clause” to end the province’s teachers’ labour action and impose a settlement.

“Teachers, you are the heart of our classrooms. Please know that you have our deepest respect and appreciation for the work that you do. It’s not just a job, it’s a calling, and it’s a calling that impacts the hearts, minds and future trajectory of a student’s life. So while this past week brings with it a whole range of emotions, sometimes all at the same time, please know that your board sees you. I know that together, we will work through this
