LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) -- There will be a planned power outage Saturday night until Sunday morning for Portland Board of Light and Power customers, the city announced on social media. An alert was also sent out through the Ionia County alert system.
Power will be shut off Saturday, Nov. 1 at 11 p.m. and isn't scheduled to return until Sunday, Nov. 2 at 8 a.m.
The outage will support ongoing work for the new Grant Street Substation, which is scheduled to go online in the spring. The intended life of a substation -- a facility that transforms and distributes power -- is between 25 to 40 years, though the average age of one in the U.S. is much older. Currently, Portland receives its power from a single substation that is 50 years old.
