HERSHEY – As Carter Smith readied for Saturday’s Class AAA championship meet – at the tail end of the PIAA’s cross country experience – Mifflin County’s talented senior felt as if he was prepared to defend the Class AAA title he claimed some 12 months ago.

Yet as Smith’s race began to unfold, something was off – and it troubled him throughout. It prevented the Oklahoma State recruit from logging the time he wanted to run, and it prevented Smith from closing out this portion of his career with another gold medal.
