Dave Roberts didn’t realize the Blue Jays relievers wrote “51” on their caps to honour Alex Vesia until after the game ended, but he said it meant “everything” to him.
The lefty was one of the Dodgers’ highest leverage bullpen arms, but was left off their World Series roster after the team announced he would be taking some time away to deal with an “extremely personal matter” with his pregnant wife.
Dodgers relievers started wearing his number on their caps, and the Jays bullpen joined in on the tribute Friday.
“I think it really speaks to the brotherhood of athletes and Major League Baseball players,” Roberts said pre-game. “They’ll all say that baseball is what we do, but it’s not who we are.”
