PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- The day after Halloween was certainly no treat for hundreds of thousands of Oregonians who rely on SNAP benefits to help with their grocery costs.
Federal money for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program is frozen as the government shutdown continues. A US District judge ordered the Trump Administration to either make a full payment by Monday or, if it decides to only tap $3 billion in a contingency fund, figure out how to do that by Wednesday. Trump said he wanted more legal clarification before resuming the payments.
But people in Portland are already feeling the burden of not having their SNAP benefits. Food pantries told KOIN 6 News they're seeing more clients and anticipate people making multiple trips throughout the month.
