Human remains found in Winton; sheriff's office investigates

WINTON, N.C. — The Hertford County Sheriff’s Office is investigating human remains discovered in Winton on Thursday.

The body was located in a wooded area behind a residence, according to the sheriff’s office. Deputies found the remains of an adult male in an advanced state of decomposition.

The cause of death is undetermined at this time. The remains have been sent to the North Carolina Medical Examiner’s Office.

“While we have a preliminary idea of who the individual may be, we are awaiting confirmation from the Medical Examiner before making any formal identification. Our investigators are working diligently to determine the circumstances surrounding this incident.”
