Dear Editor,

On April 2nd, 2025, the Town of Poughkeepsie opted into Good Cause Eviction, a monumental housing law that provides common sense protections to tenants. It passed by a 4-3 margin, an extremely narrow vote along party lines, despite 30-40 percent of the Town of Poughkeepsie’s population being renters. This was only made possible because of a slight Democratic majority.

As a renter, I sleep easier at night knowing that I’m protected from unfair evictions and excessive rent increases. Our neighborhoods can stay together and thrive because of these protections! But we only barely made this possible; we can’t afford to lose this majority, we need to expand it.
