NORTH SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) -- Northern Public Libraries (NOPL) has launched a community food drive to address local food insecurity, following a survey that highlighted the need for libraries to engage more with community issues.
The initiative comes as questions about food assistance benefits, such as SNAP, have increased the demand for food support. NOPL's food drive encourages book-lovers to donate non-perishable items like cereals, jams, and vegetables.
"The threshold for receiving benefits is very low, so there might be families making more than the threshold for something like SNAP, but they're still short on groceries," said Kara Greene, a marketing and communication specialist at NOPL.
