NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - Starting Saturday, nearly 700,000 Tennesseans won’t be able to access the federal food assistance they rely on to feed their families.
When Brooke Tansely heard about SNAP benefits being cut off during the government shutdown, she wanted to find a way to help. So, she took to Facebook with a simple idea: a grocery buddy system.
“I just said, ‘This is a SNAP grocery buddy post,’ and instructed people, if you need help, leave a comment, and if you can help, reply to that comment to claim your buddy, and then organize yourself via DMs,” Tansley said. ”People immediately started doing it.”
