NEW HAVEN, Conn. — The annual Day of the Dead parade in New Haven carried new significance this year as it honored the lives of migrants who have tragically passed away while in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

The Day of the Dead, traditionally a time for families to honor and remember loved ones, took on an activist role this year. While the event remained a celebration of life and culture, it also became a platform to demand justice for migrants who have died in detention centers.

John Lugo, lead organizer for immigrant rights group Unidad Latina en Acción, noted that at least 20 migrant deaths have been reported in ICE custody. The community gathered to raise awareness and mourn those lost.
