A man in his 40s has been located safe and well after a search and rescue operation overnight, Tasmania Police said.

The man was camping with a group near Lake Rowallan (a 1.5-hour drive south of Sheffield).

Police said he went trail riding on an ATV in the afternoon of November 1 and became disoriented.

"His companions searched nearby trails before contacting police just after 11pm," police said.

"A search and rescue operation, including police, SES and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter, commenced.

"After losing his way, the man decided to make a camp on the trail and waited until daylight to make his way safely back to the campsite about 9.15am [on November 2]."
