Rapper Meek Mill was detained early Saturday morning outside a nightclub in Midtown Manhattan as police conducted a search of his vehicle for a firearm. The incident occurred around 4 a.m. when officers stopped three men in a car that matched the description and license plate provided in a tip regarding a man with a gun.
Meek Mill, whose real name is Robert Williams, 38, expressed his frustration on social media shortly after the encounter. He wrote, "They just pulled me out the car and cuffed me in front of the whole club embarrassed the shit out of me in NYC! I’m not scared to go outside without a gun … they had guns in my face for no reason smh I thought it was a prank."
According to police sources, the search was prompted after a bouncer at the club reported feeling what he believed to be a gun on Williams during a pat-down. The bouncer advised Williams to dispose of the item, which led him to place something in his car before returning to the club.
Despite the search, police did not find a firearm in Williams' vehicle. This incident comes after Williams was previously convicted in 2008 for possessing a loaded gun in Philadelphia. The rapper's legal history has drawn attention, but no charges were filed following the recent encounter in New York City.
