From underwater meadows to electric double-deckers, a coastal UK city is showing how environmental ambition can take root – and swim – in an urban setting.

Plymouth has unveiled a sweeping set of initiatives as part of its 2025 sustainability drive, that aligned with World Sustainability Day.

The city, recently ranked among the best for quality of life in the Demos-PwC Good Growth for Cities Index, is leveraging its unique geography – nestled between Dartmoor National Park and the UK’s first National Marine Park – to deliver what it says is a “shared mission” for a greener future.

At the heart of the agenda is a major seagrass restoration effort, described as one of the largest of its kind led by a UK city.
