The Indiana State Police have launched an investigation after an inmate died following a suspected medical emergency at the St. Joseph County Jail Saturday afternoon.
According to preliminary reports, the incident occurred around 3:30 p.m. when a 50-year-old male inmate housed in the jail’s medical ward began experiencing a medical emergency. Jail staff immediately initiated life-saving measures, including the use of an Automated External Defibrillator, until South Bend EMTs arrived on scene.
Despite their efforts, the inmate was pronounced dead at the jail.
An autopsy is scheduled for Monday, Nov. 3, at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo.
