The National Party has voted to dump the plan to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050, claiming the climate policy has pushed power bills up by $800 per household.

It turns up the heat on Opposition Leader Sussan Ley and a Liberal Party which is still reviewing its energy plan.

The Nationals’ party room held a rare Sunday meeting, attended by most of their MPs and senators with the exception of Barnaby Joyce, who could exit the party to join One Nation before the 2028 election.

The group heard from the Page Research Centre, aright-leaning think-tank.

Its research shows household energy prices have shot up 39 per cent since Australia adopted net zero, or between $600 and $800 per family.

It also claims coal is $43 a megawatt hour cheaper than firmed solar and wind.
