As we rightly celebrate the unforgettable 10-year anniversary of Michelle Payne’s defiant Melbourne Cup victory this Tuesday, one key player has been written out of the story.

No one dares mention the trainer who expertly prepared Prince Of Penzance to sweep Payne to her history-making victory at Flemington in 2015 – Darren Weir.

But this time next year, we won’t have a choice to avoid his name.

By then, Weir will have served his six-year disqualification for possessing and using jiggers, and will be free to reapply for his trainer’s licence.

This will be the true test of Racing Victoria’s belief in its own rules and regulations.

No one is doubting Weir did the wrong thing. No one is questioning the severity of his penalty. On evidence, he deserved to do the time.
