On Sept. 26, the Department of Homeland Security shocked Iowans by announcing the arrest of Ian Roberts, then the superintendent of Des Moines Public Schools. Supporters of Roberts, including many children from his school district, flooded the Iowa State Capitol with messages of support. Initial reports of the arrest were unclear about the motive for the arrest, and it was hard to corroborate whether Roberts was indeed not a citizen.
