New Jersey-based flooring company Mannington Mills recently announced that it plans to exit the residential carpet business and close several of its factories, including one in Gaston County.

The move will eliminate 296 jobs at the facility, located at 200 Saxony Drive in McAdenville, according to a notice filed with the state.

When a company is planning mass layoffs or closures, it is federally required to notify the state per the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act.

In a WARN notice filed with the North Carolina Department of Commerce on Oct. 28, Mannington Mills said it is closing its residential carpet business, “as a result of the continual decline in demand and unfavorable market conditions.”

The first separations are expected to take place Dec. 27, the notice added
