Two massive losses in the ACC will bring some chaos to that conference race and the back end of the top 10 in this week’s US LBM Coaches Poll, which will have two newcomers to replace Georgia Tech and Miami.
The Yellow Jackets won’t fall too far after losing 48-36 to North Carolina State, ending the program’s best start since 1966. But Miami is staring at a steep drop after losing 26-20 in overtime to SMU.
This is the Hurricanes’ second setback in three games, joining a 24-21 loss to Louisville, and this stretch has overshadowed a perfect start to the season that included wins against Notre Dame and South Florida.
The Fighting Irish are one of the teams set to join the top 10 after taking down Boston College for their sixth win in a row. Here’s how the new US LBM Coaches Poll will look:
1. Ohio State (8-0)
The Buckeyes led Penn State by a field goal at halftime but dominated the second half to win 38-14, taking a seventh game in a row by 18 or more points. The offense was dynamite in the second half and has been much more consistent as quarterback Julian Sayin adds experience.
2. Indiana (9-0)
Maryland scored first on a field goal and then held the lead for about 10 minutes, believe it or not. Indiana went on a 55-7 run from there, though, and buried yet another overmatched Big Ten opponent. The Hoosiers won’t be stopped until the Big Ten championship at the earliest.
3. Texas A&M (8-0)
A&M is back on the field next weekend at Missouri, needing maybe just one more ranked win to become an at-large playoff lock. It will be very interesting to see where the Aggies fall in Tuesday’s debut playoff rankings; they have a case for No. 1, though No. 2 seems more likely.
4. Alabama (7-1)
With LSU is in disarray and Auburn in disarray, Alabama’s biggest hurdle to completing a perfect SEC season will be Oklahoma, which is set to climb this week’s poll after winning 33-27 at Tennessee. The Sooners also get the weak up to be healed for that trip to Tuscaloosa..
5. Georgia (7-1)
The Bulldogs were able to pull out a 24-20 win against Florida after a sputtering offense came to life in the fourth quarter. Georgia took the lead on an 82-yard touchdown drive with 4:36 left and then put the game away after forcing a turnover on downs on the Gators’ next possession.
6. Oregon (7-1)
The Ducks face three big tests in November starting with a road trip to Iowa, winners of three in a row and four of five overall in the Big Ten. Passing that road test would give Oregon some breathing room before taking on Southern California and Washington.
7. Mississippi (8-1)
The Rebels’ defense gave up just 1.6 yards per carry in a 30-14 win against South Carolina after struggling in a loss to Georgia and win against Oklahoma. Ahead 20-14 after three quarters, Ole Miss put the game away with Kewan Lacey’s 54-yard touchdown run with 5:44 to play.
8. Brigham Young (8-0)
The Cougars will move up one spot and replace Miami. This is the second year in a row BYU has climbed inside the top nine of the Coaches Poll. An off weekend will give the Cougars a little more time to prepare for a huge matchup against Texas Tech that could determine half of the conference championship game pairing.
9. Notre Dame (6-2)
It’s been a long road back to the top 10 for Notre Dame, which debuted at No. 5 in the preseason poll but dipped all the way to No. 21 after narrow losses to Texas A&M and Miami. Six wins in a row have lifted the Fighting Irish back into position to lock down a playoff bid with four more victories.
10. Texas Tech (8-1)
The Red Raiders pulled away in the second half for a 43-20 win at Kansas State, showing off the level of athleticism that still seems unmatched in the Big 12 despite an earlier loss to Arizona State. The Cougars will provide a tougher test in Lubbock.
